End Of Year Challenge Progress

Well, if you've followed the changes in the list on the right, you'll see that I've made some headway in the end-of-year-challenge I set myself this fall.

3 quilts are done, phew...

... and I recently had a spurt of basting motivation, which means after basting the BrownGellow, I also whipped up a backing for the Free As A Bird quilt and basted it.

I had planned on basting the Disaster Quilt as well, since I finally finished the borders on it, but ran into yet another disastrous problem; so it's once again out of sight out of mind in a corner. I was close to getting rid of that quilt twice now! More about that later (when I'm in a really good mood, so that after writing it I'll still be in a mediocre mood)!

I'm still staring at the Sunset on Water piece, figuring out what to do with it. I'm pretty sure it'll stay a small size, but that's all I know for now :)

Oh, and I can guarantee that the blue string quilt won't be done, and I probably won't tackle quilting the Free As A Bird quilt this year either. Oh well, it was an admirable goal, haha!

And I did of course start 3 new quilts and finish one of them, so maybe that'll make up for the unmet goals? :)

How are your plans for finishing up projects before 2011 going?

Year's End Challenge

So, as I mentioned the other day, I have a lot of QUIPs - to help me keep track of progress and share that with you, I've put the images of all the quilts I'd like to finish before 2011 rolls around in the sidebar with those tasks that remain to be done. You'll notice that I have (nearly) two finishes already since that post :)

To Do This Fall

Okay, once this quilt show is over, I need to tackle a few quilts-in-progress (hmm, that could make QUIPs, I almost like that better than WIPs :) Not so much into black leather, haha!). Mostly, because some of these projects are starting to be a tad embarrassing...

So here goes, my 2010 Fall To Do list

The two biggest culprits:

(1) Disaster Triple Irish Chain (started ~ January 2009)

This quilt came together so quickly and has been collecting dust while waiting for a border and finishing ever since. At some point I considered foregoing the border, but I think that would look weird... So, onwards!

(2) Northern Solitude Baby Quilt (started ~ May 2009)

I'm not sure how much is actually left to do on this *hand-quilted* quilt, but it's not on my completed list. I might be as simple as adding a label, but first, I have to dig it out and decide to finish what ever needs finishing on it!

LESSER CULPRITS (i.e. much more recent starts, meaning started at least in 2010!)

(3) D9P Variation

To Do: easy peasy: quilt and bind - I already have the backing picked out!

(4) Free As A Bird

To Do: work up courage to try intricate whole-cloth-type-quilting in the grey background triangles. Oooh, it's on the bias, ooh, it'll stretch and puff?!? Scary!

(5) Blue String Quilt

To Do: everything, yikes! No progress on this since this picture was taken...

(6) Bargello in Yellow and Brown

To Do: decide what this will be: a baby quilt, a wall hanging, something BIGGER?

(7) Sunset on Water

To Do: same as above, but worse - it's not even baby-size yet :)

(8) Filmstrip Cafe

To Do: Decide if I like my choice of backing, then quilt and bind!

Now, the million $ question for you: Do you think I can do this before 2011 is here? Well, I hope so! It would feel so good to have all these quilts done. My only obstacle will be that I'll have about 10 more quilts started in 2010 by the time I've finished all the old QUIPs ;) And of course that working under pressure isn't half the fun...

Hmm, I like seeing all these quilt photos in one post, maybe I should do a year in review post this new years... they seem popular, anyway!

Another UFO Update

So, I currently have 10 quilts "in progress" according to my side bar (you can find all the links there!).

I think it's likely that quite a few of them will be finished before 2010. The following are ready for quilting: Baby-Batik 9-patch, Baby-Rainbow Stacked Coins, Soft Quilt/Imagination 1 (thought it's handquilting, so this one definitely won't be done :)

I have Apple Owl 9-Patch and Baby-Wormy Apple ready for basting (thanks to my batting shopping spree earlier this week!) and I'm trying to make up my mind about borders for the Spring Squares and Oblongs and the Disaster Triple Irish Chain. Those are tricky, I've been struggling for a while now.

The MODA Northern Solitude baby quilt is still being hand-quilted, slow progress and it's on the back burner while the deadline quilts are in the limelight.

I received the final instructions for the mystery quilt on Wednesday, hurray!

Jennifer's Quilt (the modified log cabin) is still in the piecing-the-top stage, but this quilt will be done by December 14th. Yes it will. It has to be ;)

So, with this fresh list in mind, I'm off to quilting - though still sniffling through my day...

And lastly, WHEN will I ever learn not to COOK AND QUILT AT THE SAME TIME????

I thought I was only gone for 5 min, not 12, so how could I help my food burning to the bottom of the pan??? (Imagine innocent face with this statement :)

A Decision

I have decided it's time to finish some quilts:

[don't laugh when you see my ambitious list! ;)]

1) Cutlery Baby Quilt
Not really a UFO yet, work is in progress!

Left to do:
  • quilt-in-the-ditch around inner borders
  • quilt corner stones - I tried flowers, but didn't like them
  • erase marked quilting lines around blue border
  • label
(side note: I have read of quilters taking out the quilting on entire quilts. I just took out the blue border I did with the free-motion quilt - it looked horrid - and redid it with the walking foot, but that was enough seam-ripper action for me)

2) Apple-Owl Quilt
UFO since July 2009

I managed to find more sashing fabric!! The original was pure cotton sheeting, but it turns out that Kona has the exact same fabric. Since the store I bought the original at renames their fabrics, it may well be that their pure cotton sheeting is Kona. If that's the case, my bargain purchases at 1.99$Can a meter were a total steal!

3) Character Quilt
UFO since July 2009

Left to do:
  • put backing together
  • cut awesome batting: it's 50% cotton and 50% bamboo and soooo soft... (and really affordable!). It's almost too nice to hide inside a quilt...
  • baste, quilt, bind, label
Here's my idea for backing because for some reason when I found more of the red fabric in a store I get to only very rarely, my math skills temporarily kicked out and I was convinced that 3 m would be enough for the backing. Whoops. 5 m is more like it, so I stretched it with black and blocks of the novelty print fabrics. I really don't know what else I'd ever use them for, so might as well make a reversible quilt...

4) Disaster Quilt (Triple Irish Chain)
UFO since February 2009

Left to do:
  • decide on borders and binding
  • find a backing!
  • baste, quilt, bind, label

5) Oriental Quilt
UFO since February 2009

Left to do:
  • cut batting (yay, easy!)
  • baste, quilt, bind, label

6) Spring Quilt
UFO since April 2009

Left to do:
  • Decide on borders
  • decide on backing

7) MODA Northern Solitude Baby Quilt
Not really a UFO either, totally a work in progress.

Left to do:
  • lots of hand-quilting, so this is a long-term ongoing project
  • I started doing a neat pattern I saw on Diane Gaudynski's blog called Diane-shiko, you can see it used on a large area in this post

As you can see, I'm going to be very very busy!!!
