Quiltshow Part 3

Alright, last batch, enjoy these while they last!

Nearly identical patterns, but done by two different quilters.

They both had very elaborate quilting. Just easier to see on the light one.

Oh, how I love these kaleidoscope quilts. Wanna wanna wanna make one too!

This cool pattern is a log-cabin, can you believe it? You start with a square but then add triangles to get this funky effect.

I had an idea very similar to this one: I wanted to make orphan block mini-quilts and connect them just like it's done here. There are actually spaces between the connecting pieces; the black showing through is the backing of the quilt on the other side! I never had enough orphan blocks (I usually use all my block up in the quilt they're made for. How does one get orphan blocks???).

And lastly, check these tiny tiny log cabins out! My finger is just hovering above the quilt (don't touch, just look!), for scale.

It was so nice to got to a quilt show and be inspired. Many of the quilts weren't quite my style (the ones where I'd say WOW! all the time), but I got some cool ideas for future quilts, anyway! Plus, I went with some friends and colleagues, and maybe they've become inspired enough to start quilting :)

Aborted Project

What do you think this quilt was going to be??

For those of you who recognized the templates: correct, a friend of mine was getting married and I had planned an ambitious blue&white wedding ring quilt. I chose the fabrics to have dark and light rings on white background, prepared the templates, got ready to cut --- and received a letter from the bride-to-be, in which she told me about her plans of making a wedding-ring quilt in memory of the wedding (they had a hand-binding ceremony and she wanted to use the fabric in the quilt).

Waaah!!! Well, I was glad I hadn't started cutting the pieces yet :) I can't make the same quilt pattern as her, of course... maybe, I'll keep the colours and make a different pattern. This is on the back burner for now, anyway :)

Quiltshow Part 2

On to the next batch from the Quiltshow in Lüneburg!

These next few quilts are based on work by an Austrian architect and artist named Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (born as Friedrich Stowasser). Go ahead and google-translate his artistic name, just for the fun of it!

These were really 3-dimensional quilts, with opening window shutters, puffy plants, etc.

This tree is the reason why you don't need to throw out any fabric, ever. Not even the tiniest pieces. You just chuck them onto background fabric and sew allover it. If you use different green pieces, you get a tree. How cool is that???

 Detail of the door.

Very intensive and detailed quilting. It really made the coloured shapes pop out of the quilt.

I liked the arrangements of the quilt. They weren't in close rows like I'm used to. There was lots of space to step back and get the 'big picture', but also get up close to see the details.

So simple, yet so nice!

The middle quilt is the Storm at Sea pattern. It always amazes me how variable this pattern is. Never made it yet. It's also on the to-do list.

One more batch to come! I'm also busy quilting, yay!

Quiltshow Part 1

I promised more photos of the quilt show.  It was held over the last weekend of April in Lüneburg (Germany). Let's start with the quilts I entered into the show. Except for the 3rd one from the left, bottom row, they're all older quilts (2009-2011). Everything from wallhanging to double-bed sizes:

And here some impressions. See how many of my quilts you can spot :)

These were calendar quilt "pages"from a quilt group (not nearby, sadly). See the repeating patterns? Yet each one had a personal touch, just from slightly different arrangments of appliqued pieces, different colour choices, etc.

They had real plants and flowers, which gave the gym a nice feel and smelled really good, too!

Cool overlay effect on this quilt!

Really cool optical illusion. It's a bargello technique and will go on my to-do list.

More quilts in a few days, that'll give you some time to let these ones sink in :)

Quilt Exhibition

Hooray, 11 of my quilts were exhibited in local quilt exhibition a couple of weeks ago! I'll post some photos of the exhibition soon.
This is the pile of quilts that I had to part with for a weekend (it was weird to hand them over to a stranger. I kept thinking: what if there's a fire where the quilts are kept before and after the exhibition?? Ah, panic!):
