As a child, I thought I was going to be a scientist and be one of the first to colonize the moon...when I dreamed, I dreamed BIG!!!! Now, I don't think so....:)
I have a nephew that worked in Alaska for a year with sled dog teams. He loved his time there...this fabric would make a great keepsake quilt for him.

Couldn't be more fitting, eh? There were a few entries with connections to Alaska - which is great - I love when fabric goes to such good use :)

Give-away for the big 10,000

Well, fewer then 50 more visitors and I will have had 10,000 visitors since I put the counter on in June 2009 (I think???). Pretty darn exciting! So I'm going to have a give-away this week. Who, Me???

Remember the massive give-away Sew, Mama, Sew! had a few months back in May?

Well, of course I browsed around and found lots of cool blogs and lots of things I wanted to win. I don't know how many give-away's I entered, but hooray, I won one, at http://corvidarium.blogspot.com. This is weird for me, as I rarely win compared to some people out there.

I think my odds were slightly improved by only having 2 other contestants. Hmm.

Either way, after emails getting lost in cyberspace and one parcel getting lost in the mail (within Canada, not even international mail!), I finally received my winnings the other day: these supercute home-made magnets:

5000 Visitors!

Wow, I've had 5000 visits to my blog since I started counting last summer!

I'm planning to have a give-away in honour of this event - it'll come soon, the fabrics are almost chosen :) But first I have some fun posts lined up about a new technique I learned at an event organized by my quilt guild!

PS: just out of curiosity, I googled the number 5000, strange idea, I know :)

I learned that James Madison's portrait was printed on the 5000$ bill until it was discontinued in the late 60s.

I also learned that a lot of people wonder if the Series 5000 Sleep Number Beds are better than the Series 7000 :)

And from Wikipedia I learned:
5000 (five thousand) is the natural number following 4999 and preceding 5001. Five thousand is the largest isogrammic number in the English language.

So I had to look up isogrammic:
An isogram (also known as a "nonpattern word") is a logological term for a word or phrase without a repeating letter. It is also used by some to mean a word or phrase in which each letter appears the same number of times, not necessarily just once.

I didn't bother to look up logological, because I got the gist of it the answer. But really, 5000 being the largest isogrammic number in the English language...

Can You Believe It?

I won a give-away. Now, if you've ever held a give-away and I entered, my comment probably read "Blah blah. I never win. Blah blah". That's because I never ever win anything. But Anne of Film and Thread has broken the spell :)


This awesome Halloween fabric arrived just in time for the actual Halloween day, along with a couple of extra goodies: an iron-on seamstress and a really cool flower - is it a cotton flower? I don't actually know, but it wandered straight into one of the flower pots next to my dining table!

Congratulations to Renee G, the winner of give-away part 1, and Sandy and Cosmo, winner(s) of the challenge. Many of you guessed correctly that the nagging feeling of something being wrong when I started to work on the quilt had to do with North and South Pole animals suddenly mingling. Since I'm a scientist, I couldn't help that feeling :)

Regarding the blocks touching in the center: They're actually purposefully arranged somewhat randomly. I'm not a huge fan of symmetry... organization: yes, symmetry: not so much.

Okay, here we go - this is so exciting!

My give-away has two parts. I picked fat quarters from an eclectic mix of fabrics to give away. The two winners will each win 3 fat quarters from this selection, and there is some bonus fabric for the winner who completes the challenge part.


We've got cranes, tiny mice and cheese, musical instruments, rockets, Hawaiian flowers and brown toile looking for new homes!

The winner of the challenge will win a piece of fabric I used in the Fun On Ice quilt, it's shown in this next picture.
